IN PERSON WITH HASU PATEL
Meets five consecutive days: Monday–Friday, June 6–10
A rare opportunity to sit with Hasu Patel and imbibe this classical and ancient art form.
A raga may be defined as a specified combination of notes within a thaat (mode, scale) which has the power to evoke a unique feeling, distinct from all other joys and sorrows and which possesses something of a transcendental element. Northern Indian music recognizes 10 parent modes, from which all ragas derive.
Included will be:
- Raga and thaat theory: notes included, note combinations allowed, time of day to play, etc
- Vocal exercises to practice microtones, the soul of Indian music
- Saragam and lakshan geet
- 16-beat rhythm (teentaal)
- Sample ragas
- How to build improvisations in tane
About Hasu Patel
A close and longtime friend of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, Hasu Patel is a composer, performer and educator of music of India. She is one of the few world-class female artists performing classical music on sitar today. Hasu plays Sitar in a very special style known as Gayaki Ang (vocal style), where the sitar replicates the fluidity and subtle nuances of the human voice. This innovative technique is credited to her Guru, the Sitar legend Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib of Imdad Khani Gharana. She has dedicated her life to preserving and propagating in its pristine purity, the fascinating, and highly evolved classical music of Ancient India. She wrote her concerto for full orchestra, choir, sitar and tabla while on retreat at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm. She teaches at Oberlin College’s Conservatory of Music. She played at the 30th and 50th anniversaries of the 1969 Woodstock music festival.
