Sometimes the cause of depression is physical; it may be due to indigestion. Or a cloudy day can bring on depression. Or maybe there is some unnecessary fear, worry and anxiety that results in an inability to face difficulties. Twenty-three percent of us will suffer from some depressive symptoms in our lifetime.
Depression consistently ranks among the most common health conditions self-treated with yoga. Classical yoga, a comprehensive life discipline, is easily adapted for a wide range of practitioners. It aims to harmonize body, mind and spirit and to transcend suffering by developing an abiding awareness of one’s spiritual nature.
Swami Sivananda, trained as a medical doctor, wrote a considerable amount on the topic of depression. We will go through his 18 practical hints, spanning all areas of the yogic lifestyle.
We can touch on the areas of sleep, energy, appetite—and the mind. Swami Sivananda says, “Do not listen to the promptings of the mind. Reject them ruthlessly.”
