An oft-cited Ayurvedic proverb states,
“If diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. If diet is right, medicine is of no need.”
Ayurveda considers what we eat and how we eat to be fundamental in the maintenance of health. When considering the beneficial effects of food, we consider the taste, the cooling or heating effect on the body, and the impact the food has on the body after it is digested. By these qualities, we can determine the best tastes and foods for the season or for the person’s constitution. It is best when the foods taken during the course of the day contain all six tastes, though the quantities of each taste are specific to the needs of the individual.
