Over 36 million Americans suffer from migraines—more than the number who have diabetes and asthma combined. I had my first migraine attack when I was 30, living in New York, working an 80-hour-a-week job. For the next two decades, it was my constant companion, rearing its head at the most inconvenient of times to grind my life to a halt with its debilitating symptoms. Allopathic medicine could only offer symptomatic relief. It did not offer a satisfactory explanation for why it might be happening and how I might prevent or minimize it. While I did notice that certain things provided relief (e.g. sleep, shutting out light), while others aggravated it (ginger tea, travel), I could not discern any consistent pattern for what triggered it. Then, I discovered Ayurveda. Through self-study and what online resources I could find, I learned that my migraines were a Vata-Pitta phenomenon. As I came to more deeply understand how certain of my diet and lifestyle habits were aggravating Vata and Pitta, I began to see patterns in migraine episodes more clearly. I began to experiment with simple diet and lifestyle tools and practices, which ultimately helped me manage my situation without medication.

In this session, we will begin with a quick recap of the basic Ayurvedic concepts like Dosha, and then move into the Ayurvedic explanation of migraines and headaches. (In Ayurveda, migraines are one type of headache, but its treatment is no different than that for headaches.) We’ll discuss diet and lifestyle suggestions to help manage the symptoms, and to prevent or minimize them.  There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.
