Krishna Janmastami Puja

Wednesday, September 6, 2023 @ (PDT) 7:30 PM 9:00 PM UTC+0

IN PERSON OR ONLINE

We observe Kṛṣṇa Janmāṣṭamī (Lord Krishna’s birthday) today. Originally, in Vṛndāvana, all the cowherd women and men were invited to participate, and they arrived in jubilation. A band played for the enjoyment of the assembled people. Brāhmaṇas chanted Vedic hymns for the good fortune of Kṛṣṇa. During the chanting, Kṛṣṇa was bathed. This bathing ceremony is technically called abhiṣeka, and even today this is observed in all the temples of Vṛndāvana as Janmāṣṭamī Day, or the birthday anniversary of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Story of Krishna’s Birth

Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva at midnight in a dungeon in Mathura. Miraculously, Vasudeva was able to carry the baby out of the dungeon, make his way to Vrindavan, switch Krishna for a baby girl born to Yashoda and Nanda and return to the dungeon unnoticed—to save the child from the wrath of Kamsa. When Kamsa heard the baby’s cries he feared for his life. He rushed in to kill the baby, but the baby flew into the air in the form of the demigoddess Maya and told Kamsa that the child had been born elsewhere and that he would be unable to kill him.
