This is an ongoing series. You can join any time. \nThis ongoing workshop series is generously offered by a world-class sitar player. Its aim is to give students a window into her passion—the theory and practice of the classical Indian raga system\, Raga Sangeet—and to provide context surrounding this sacred music.  \n\nWithin the arts tradition of Music of North India\, this unique and innovative program is intended to offer awareness\, creativity and an experience of healing in the attendees at all levels. It will enhance greater understanding of the rare and sacred Classical music of Ancient India in its pristine purity\, including the theory of the Raga and Tala system. Feel the harmonizing vibrations of the vocal exercises within the body building over time. The course is being taught in the traditional style\, which has special rules regarding the practice itself\, and respect for fellow students and the teacher. (Optional weekly Vocal Exercises Workshops integrate the teachings and principles of this class.) \nThis Nada Yoga series include: \n• History and theory of the music of India• Presentation of the Swaras (musical notes) and major Thatas (scales)• Singing exercises with different Thaats (scale patterns)• Teaching of one Raga with Bandish (rhythmic composition) and Tanes (improvisations)• Recitation of Sanskrit hymns and kirtans \n\nHasu Patel is available privately for individual instruction on Sitar and Tabla. \n \nTeacher\n\n\n\nA close and longtime friend of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers\, Hasu Patel is a composer\, performer and educator of music of India. She is one of the few world-class female artists performing classical music on sitar today. Hasu plays Sitar in a very special style known as Gayaki Ang (vocal style)\, where the sitar replicates the fluidity and subtle nuances of the human voice. This innovative technique is credited to her Guru\, the Sitar legend Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib of Imdad Khani Gharana. She has dedicated her life to preserving and propagating in its pristine purity\, the fascinating\, and highly evolved classical music of Ancient India. She wrote her concerto for full orchestra\, choir\, sitar and tabla while on retreat at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm. She teaches at Oberlin College’s Conservatory of Music. Cultivate energized intentional sound by bringing awareness to our tone. \nINSTRUCTOR \nGAAYATRI is a practicing Naad Yogini descending from one of the last living lineages of Naad Yogis. Her lineage\, the Rampur-Maihar Senia Gharana\, is one of the last living lines of music that can be traced back to Mian Tansen\, a legendary musician who bears training from the greatest Naad Yogi of living memory – Swami Haridas. It is one of the last living traditions of Naad Yoga where music is passed down to students as a deeply spiritual practice\, and practiced as a lifestyle. She is the first pure vocalist of this lineage since the 16th century and was trained to represent this rare vocal practice in its most authentic form. \nShe studied under the Late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan beginning her training with him in the traditional Guru-Shishya parampara at the age of 4\, studying with him for her whole childhood until his passing. All of the body’s processes will benefit. \n• Moderation – Provides balance to our lives and prevents overindulgence. Most commonly\, the road to ill health begins with a lapse in judgment. Even though we know better\, we frequently choose to make unhealthy choices\, most often in pursuit of sense pleasures.
