Durga Puja w/ Pundit Mani-Sharma

Join us for Durga Puja

a celebration of victory over negative thoughts and tendencies.

Mother Durga is symbolic of intelligence, mercy and beauty in all things.

In this Durga Puja we will offer water, scented powders, flowers, mantras, the ringing of a bell, and sweet foods; symbolically we offer up our negative tendencies and self arrogating principle which is responsible for suffering as the sense of separation.

**Your offerings of monetary donation, flowers and fruits may be given to one of the volunteers on Sunday (preferably before 6pm)**

Durga represents the Divine Mother. She is the energy aspect of the Lord. Without Durga, Shiva has no expression and without Shiva, Durga has no existence. Shiva is the soul of Durga; Durga is identical with Shiva. Lord Shiva is only the silent witness. He is motionless, absolutely changeless. He is not affected by the cosmic play. It is Durga who does everything.

Shakti is the omnipotent power of the Lord, or the Cosmic Energy. The Divine Mother is represented as having ten different weapons in Her hands. She sits on a lion. She keeps up the play of the Lord through the three attributes of Nature, namely, Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas. Knowledge, peace, lust, anger, greed, egoism and pride, are all Her forms.

The Mother’s Grace is boundless. Her mercy is illimitable; Her knowledge infinite; Her power immeasurable; Her glory ineffable; and Her splendour indescribable. She gives you material prosperity as well as spiritual freedom.

Approach Her with an open heart. Lay bare your heart to Her with frankness and humility. Be as simple as a child. Kill ruthlessly the enemies of egoism, cunningness, selfishness and crookedness. Make a total, unreserved, and ungrudging self-surrender to Her. Sing Her praise. Repeat Her Name. Worship Her with faith and unflinching devotion. Perform special worship on the Navaratri days. Navaratri is the most suitable occasion for doing intense spiritual practices. These nine days are very sacred to the Divine Mother. Plunge yourself in Her worship.

Yoga & Ayurveda: Emotional Wellness w/ Arun Deva

How do we understand the emotional body?

In Ayurveda the mind begins in the heart, reaches downwards into the gut and upwards into the brain. The connections are easy to see as seats of feelings, instincts and sensation/thought. All our instincts and our rational thinking revolve around the mediating emotional state. In Vedic terms this is described as rasāvāda: the revealing of our Essence.

5-Week Pranayama Course

5-Week Pranayama Course

Prana is the universal principle of energy or force. “Whatever moves or works or has life, is but an expression or manifestation of prana.” Breath is the external manifestation of prana. With the regular practice of pranayama—or controlling prana—you can store this energy in your brain and nerve plexi. You need an abundance of prana to be healthy and strong. Hatha Yoga has developed this to a science.

In this 5-session course, we will introduce and practice kapalabhati and anuloma viloma (alternate nostril breathing), in addition to sun salutations and relaxation.

  • Learn a safe practice you can do daily,
  • building up the number of rounds over the course of the five weeks at your own pace.
  • Balance and calm the mind.
  • Tone your body, internal organs and digestion.
  • We will look at classic sitting positions, kriyas and anatomy of breathing.
  • Build your awareness of energy, while consciously building, storing, purifying and chanelling prana.

Swami Sivananda says, “A Pranayama practitioner will have a light body free from disease, very fair complexion, a sweet melodious voice, and pleasant smell from his body. He will have good appetite, cheerfulness, a handsome figure, good strength,  courage, enthusiasm, a high standard of health, vigour and vitality, and good concentration of mind.”

The practice is easy and the benefits immediate. Cultivate the discipline, with the encouragement of the group practice.

The course meets 5 consecutive Sunday mornings.  (A weeknight course can be scheduled on request.)

Yantra Painting Weekend

Yantra Painting Weekend

Two workshops

Choose a residential stay or attend per session

A yantra is a powerful meditation tool, both through the process—plotting the mathematical structure and systematically painting it—and as a symbol of the mantra it represents (with a central focal point). Focus and quiet concentration are required. The visual and nonverbal right hemisphere of the brain is enlisted. With the inner silence comes self-awareness. Watch your experience and find the center again. Encountering the symmetrical, geometric pattern fosters inner harmony.

Elevate your consciousness by connecting to the Divine, the universal cosmology.

We begin with the Ganesha yantra, pictured above, carefully drawing the sacred geometry, then painting with the specific colors of the Ganesha energy. Participants work at their own pace. If you have already painted the Ganesha yantra, you will have the opportunity to paint a planet yantra.

All materials provided, but you are welcome to bring a pencil, eraser, compass and/or straight edge with metric measurements. No experience necessary. Please sign up in advance.

Drop in for workshops, asana classes and meals or check in by 7:00pm Friday 1/24 and enjoy the whole weekend.
