His only defense was a pocketful of marigold flowers. He even flew on a self-made Planet Earth Passport. Some hold that they celebrate the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. It also commemorates the day when the triumphant Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. On this day also Sri Krishna and His wife Satya Bama killed the demon Narakasura. \nPeople forget and forgive on this day. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 4 • 7:00–9:00pm  \nRhitom Sarkar plays slide guitar accompanied by Dani Ekbote on tabla \n\n\n\nBorn to musician parents RHITOM SARKAR\, a child prodigy\, was initiated into Indian classical music\, but when he picked up a guitar\, he was mesmerized by its ability to glide. The highly innovative mind of Rhitom restlessly searched the ways and means to incorporate all the finer nuances of Indian music on his guitar. \nAt the age of nine\, he began learning guitar under Pt. Debashish Bhattacharya and continued for ten years. He learned under Mr. Debotosh Dey\, Guitarist of AIR and had advanced training with Pt. Shyamal Chatterjee (sitarist)\, a disciple of Late Ustad Dabir Khan Sahib\, and Pt. Ravi Shankar. He received taleem from Tabla maestro Subhankar Banerjee and Pt. Samar Saha. Rhitom attended a special appreciation class with Pt. Ajoy Chakroborty (vocal) and Pt. Budhadeb Dasgupta (sarod). He also received taleem in incorporating Classical Music in Spanish (Western) Guitar under the guidance of music composer-director Sri Madhu Mukherjee. \nRhitom’s specialties include performing uncommon Ragas and Talas\, incorporating elements of Spanish Guitar into Indian classical music\, and creating a meditative effect stimulating the chakras.  \nDANI EKBOTE was raised in the tradition of the Ajarada Gharana under the guidance of his father\, Shri Hemant Ekbote. From the age of ten until adulthood\, he was a regular attendee of Ustad Zakir Hussain’s invite-only tabla workshop\, where he refined his craft. He is now a disciple of legendary Tabla Maestro Pandit Yogesh Samsi. His performance career has taken him across the world\, from India\, Canada\, Panama and many more. Born in south India in 1887\, he served for many years as a medical doctor before renouncing worldly life and establishing an ashram in Rishikesh\, north India in 1932. \nHis mission was to serve humanity through yoga and in 1936 founded the Divine Life Society. He developed the Yoga of Synthesis\, an amalgamation of the Four Paths of Yoga that he summarised as: “Serve\, love\, give\, purify\, meditate\, realize.”  He is the author of more than 300 books on all aspects of yoga providing spiritual guidance to millions around the world. Though he never left his native India his teachings quickly spread internationally\, leaving a legacy of love\, peace and knowledge still unfolding today. \nWe honor his generous spirit and sincere love for all. It is highly technical\, involving intricate footwork\, body movements\, and facial expressions to convey emotions and tell stories. \nWe highly recommend this sublime dance performance by Oindrila Roy Mallick. \n“Graceful\, captivating and full of emotion.” \nOINDRILA ROY MALLICK is well-known among the younger generation of Bharatanatyam dancers in India. Trained initially under the late Guru K. P.P Thampi from the age of five\, Oindrila honed her dance skills further under legendary Guru Khagendra Nath Barman\, one of the most senior disciples of Guru Rukmini Devi Arundale\, founder of the unique “Kalakshetra” style (of Bharataatyam). In 2011\, she came under the guidance of Guru Abhoy Pal of Kalamandalam style. Oindrila’s dance reflects the cumulative richness of her learning experience.         She teaches dance in India and has been touring in Europe since 2011. Recently\, she received the Chairman’s Award at the International Multicultural Dance and Music Festival in Pune\, India. In 2021\, she received “The Best Bharatanatyam Dancer” award from Lion’s Club Chennai. If you have been affected by the recent fires\, come as our guest. If you would like to support those who have been displaced\, we welcome your generous donations. Proceeds of this concert will be awarded to Paul and Alma Livingstone who lost their home and music studio in the Altadena Fire. Their positivity and significant community work in the arts is already a huge support for their beloved neighborhood. Read more about their Soul Force Project here\, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that promotes changemaking through global music and the arts for all ages. They present live events and community activations around themes of nonviolent action.  \n\nMeet the distinguished musicians who will perform: \n* * * Paul Livingstone starts off the evening with a bass solo. \nInternational performing artist and activist Paul Livingstone spent a highly formative teenage year initiating his study of music in India\, eventually becoming one of the few American disciples of the legendary Pt. Ravi Shankar. He has performed around the US\, South Asia\, Europe\, and Latin America\, developing a reputation as a serious proponent of Indian classical raga music. In 2022 Paul completed a 6-month research fellowship researching dhrupad\, one of the planet’s oldest living music traditions and performed widely around India. \nAs a composer\, Paul brings a grounded knowledge of tradition to his work. He has composed and recorded for film and television\, as well as for numerous live theater and dance productions. He has performed on three Grammy-winning records and is featured on diverse world music and jazz crossover records with artists such as the late Juan Gabriel\, Alanis Morrisette\, Ricky Kej\, Ozomatli\, Josef Leimberg\, Build an Ark\, Tyler Childers and Chrissie Hynde. \nPaul leads the Arohi Ensemble and performs regularly as a classical sitarist and world/jazz crossover upright bassist. He is on the music faculty at Glendale Community College as a teacher of Indian and world music ensembles.  \n. \n* * * The program continues with dhrupad vocals by Sumeet Anand accompanied by Amol Ghode on pakhawaj.\n. \nSumeet Anand Pandey (stage name) is a hereditary musician of the illustrious Darbhanga lineage of vocalists from Bihar in India known particularly for Dhrupad. This is the extant form of Hindustani classical music formalised towards the latter half of the medieval period. Grandson of Padmashri Pandit Siyaram Tiwari and disciple of Pandit Abhay Narayan Mallick (grandnephew and master disciple of Padmashri Pandit Ram Chatur Mallick)\, Sumeet is professionally active in this field as a performer and teacher for over a decade. \n \nSumeet is A-grade artist of All India Radio (A.I.R) and has performed extensively in India as well as toured Berlin\, Rome\, Paris\, Madrid\, Hague\, London\, Prague\, Budapest and other European cities for concerts and workshops. He received fellowships from the Ministry of Culture\, Government of India and Sahitya Kala Parishad\, Government of Delhi and  conducted research on Dhrupad\, its historical journey and evolving pedagogy. His debut album titled ‘Morning Meditation-Dhrupad of Darbhanga Tradition’ was released in 2020 on Naxos World (now ARC Music) worldwide. \n \nSupported by a Fulbright Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship (FNAPE) for 2024-25\, Sumeet is in the USA for the first time and hosted by the Department of Ethnomusicology\, Herb Alpert School of Music\, UCLA as Visiting Associate Professor Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 terms for concerts\, workshop\, teaching and research. Photo credit: House of Music\, Budapest\n \nDhrupad is the ancient style of North Indian (also known as Hindustani) classical music that developed in the 14th century and flourished for the next 3-4 centuries before acceding its popularity to the newer style\, Khayal. Originally sung at temples and later in royal courts and now in public concerts\, Dhrupad is known for its calmer nature\, majestic gait\, and melodic\, rhythmic and lyrical richness. The presentation strives to create a sense of tranquility and avoids an exhibitionist approach but is not bereft of depth and virtuosity. \n\n\n \n\nAmol Ghode belongs to an old and well-known tradition of Pakhawaj players called the Nana Panse tradition. His guru in Pakhawaj\, Pt. Vasantrao Ghorpadkar was a renowned and respected Pakhawaj player. Amol continues his learning from Pt. Ghorpadkar’s grandson Shri. Nikhil Ghorpadkar. \nAmol got his earliest training in Tabla in Kolhapur\, India from Pt. Keshavrao Dharmadhikari and his son Pt. Rajprasad Dharmadhikari. As a young artist\, he was honored with a prestigious scholarship from the Govt of India. He is also currently taking lessons in Khyal singing of Gwalior and Agra traditions from Pt. Chandrashekhar Mahajan. He has done sound and music work for films by Kumar Shahani\, Gurvinder Singh and Elroy Pinto. Amol lives in San Diego. Hear a sample of his playing here. \n\n\n\n* * * * *\n \nA recital opens with Aalap—a semi-abstract unfolding of a rāg (a melodic framework) having non-pulsating (anibaddha) and pulsating (nibaddha) parts\, performed over the drone instrument\, Tanpura. The musical notes are pronounced through vowels derived from Sanskrit chanting ‘Hari Om Anant Narayan’. Compositions set to different Taal (rhythmic cycle)\, mainly in Sanskrit and Braj bhasha are sung towards the later half of a concert\, with the percussive accompaniment of Pakhawaj (barrel-shaped drum).\n \nDevotional and sacred compositions\, as well as other themes such as nature\, seasons and spirituality are common in Dhrupad repertoire. A recital culminates with upaj (Improvisation) where the artists engage in spontaneous musical conversations moving away from the fixed structure of composition with improvisations melodically\, rhythmically\, lyrically as well as emotionally.\n\n\n \nIntimate setting\nPlease carpool\, if possible. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 13 • 6:00–8:00pm  \nPANDIT SUMAN LAHA was born in Kolkata\, where he was inspired by his great grand uncle\, late Shri Nadu Mullick\, to pursue his love for music. Shri Mullick was a close friend of Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. \nTaught in the purest senia tradition by his teacher Pt. Shyamal Chattopadhyay\, Suman has become one of the most accomplished practitioners of stringed Indian Classical music. Suman’s instrument of choice is a variation of the more traditional veena\, a design that Suman himself crafted. His style of music stays true to traditional Dhrupad\, maintaining strict grammar and rules. He is especially skilled at maintaining his grammatical excellence even when performing uncommon ragas and talas. \nSuman has performed in many prestigious musical conferences and concerts in India. He has also extensively toured Europe\, performing in concerts\, workshops and music festivals. In the US\, Suman has been performing in concerts for musical organizations and universities\, as well as teaching Indian Classical music since 2001.  \n \nTalent\, virtuosity and youthful dynamism blend in perfect proportion to project INDRANIL MALLICK as a leading tabla player of his generation.
