SUMMARY:Krishna Janmastami Puja
DESCRIPTION:IN PERSON OR ONLINE \nWe observe Kṛṣṇa Janmāṣṭamī (Lord Krishna’s birthday) today. Originally\, in Vṛndāvana\, all the cowherd women and men were invited to participate\, and they arrived in jubilation. A band played for the enjoyment of the assembled people. Brāhmaṇas chanted Vedic hymns for the good fortune of Kṛṣṇa. During the chanting\, Kṛṣṇa was bathed. This bathing ceremony is technically called abhiṣeka\, and even today this is observed in all the temples of Vṛndāvana as Janmāṣṭamī Day\, or the birthday anniversary of Lord Kṛṣṇa.  \nStory of Krishna’s Birth\nKrishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva at midnight in a dungeon in Mathura. Miraculously\, Vasudeva was able to carry the baby out of the dungeon\, make his way to Vrindavan\, switch Krishna for a baby girl born to Yashoda and Nanda and return to the dungeon unnoticed—to save the child from the wrath of Kamsa. When Kamsa heard the baby’s cries he feared for his life. He rushed in to kill the baby\, but the baby flew into the air in the form of the demigoddess Maya and told Kamsa that the child had been born elsewhere and that he would be unable to kill him. \nDonations of flowers\, sweets\, fruits or dakshina are welcome. \nOnline participants: We will be on our regular Satsang Zoom link: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/99199972563?pwd=bzFGZHRlRVpzcDNQbG9rM0tSSXBPUT09 \nYou can also prepare your own offerings of flowers and prasad and participate from home.  \n \nRegister\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *Phone *I will attend the Ganesha Chaturti Puja *in persononlineDonation ($20 suggested)Please fill in the amount you'd like to donate.Comment or MessageTotal$0.00MessageSubmit

SUMMARY:Puja in Honor of the Mahasamadhi of Swami Sivananda
DESCRIPTION:IN PERSON OR ONLINEOnline participants can use our regular Zoom link for the morning Satsang. \nCompetent disciples are never in want of a competent Guru. Realized souls are not rare. Ordinary ignorant-minded persons cannot easily recognize them. Only a few persons\, who are pure and embodiments of all virtuous qualities\, can understand realized souls\, and they only will be benefitted in their company. \nSo long as there is a world\, there are Gurus and Vedas to guide the struggling souls in the path of Self-realization. The number of realized souls may be less in the Iron Age when compared with the Satya Yuga\, but they are always present to help the aspirants. Let each person take the path according to their capacity\, temperament and understanding. Their Sadguru will meet them along that path. \nWe honor the wisdom\, generosity and love we receive through our lineage of teachers and perform a Puja (Bhakti Yoga ritual)\, to invoke their blessings. All are welcome to attend. \nIf participating from home\, you are welcome to prepare your own offerings of flowers and prasad at home.  \n \n\n\nRegister\n\n\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *Phone *I will attend the puja *in persononlineDonation *Price: $25.00Additional DonationComment or MessageTotal$0.00Stripe Credit Card *Submit

SUMMARY:Songs\, Stories & Poems with Stephen Longfellow Fiske
DESCRIPTION:IN PERSON OR ONLINE \nThis event will be offered on our regular Satsang Zoom link. \nWe welcome longtime friend of Sivananda Yoga\, Stephen Longfellow Fiske\, for Sunday Satsang. He has supported our Yoga Teacher Training Courses for many years and used to play for Swami VIshnudevananda himself. He has many inspiring stories to tell. \nStephen is a musician\, author\, poet\, Interfaith Minister and long-time peace and environmental activist. He is a multi-talented individual whose dedication to peace\, humanitarian\, environmental and spiritual concerns has always found expression through his artistic pursuits. Since his first album release\, Seeds of Peace\, in 1980\, through his current CD (11th) Flow\, Stephen has established himself as an inspired performer and veteran poet/spokesman of the times. He has authored “The Art of Peace” (New Paradigm Books) and “The Call to Interfaith”\, and has performed and spoken widely across the US and abroad. “Flow” is a selection of original orchestrated\, melodic guitar compositions with guest recording artists. The featured track is “Jerusalem Prayer”\, which has become the soundtrack for a film in development by that same title which forms the foundation for The Jerusalem Prayer Project (JPP)\, a music\, film\, and multimedia venture\, of which Stephen is the founder and executive director/producer. Most recently\, Stephen and his JPP partner\, filmmaker Robert Corsini\, have produced the music video tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.\, “We Carry the Dream”\, based on Stephen’s song co-written with Sophia Roberts\, and released in February 2018. \n. . . \nRegister\n\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *Phone *I will attend *in persononlineOptional DonationComment or MessageTotal$0.00Stripe Credit Card *Submit

SUMMARY:Puja in Honor of the Mahasamadhi of Swami Vishnudevananda
DESCRIPTION:IN PERSON OR ONLINEOnline participants can use our regular Zoom link for the morning Satsang. \nAlthough teaching yoga was the central theme of his life\, Swamiji felt the need to take more direct action. And this is where the peace plane arrives on the scene. It was painted by the American artist Peter Max. Swamiji called it the “Plane of Hope” and with it\, he wanted to break the manmade boundaries that separate people from people and country from country. His only defense was a pocketful of marigold flowers. He even flew on a self-made Planet Earth Passport. His goal was to bring unity in diversity using Yogic discipline and Yogic life. “My mission was\, as much as possible\, to reduce the negative influence on human society by positive suggestions and a positive way of life.” \nWe honor the wisdom\, generosity and love we receive through our lineage of teachers and perform a Puja (Bhakti Yoga ritual)\, to invoke their blessings. All are welcome to attend. \nIf participating from home\, you are welcome to prepare your own offerings of flowers and prasad at home.  \n\n\nRegister\n\n\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *Phone *I will attend the puja *in persononlineDonation *Price: $25.00Additional DonationComment or MessageTotal$0.00Stripe Credit Card *Submit

SUMMARY:Diwali: Festival of Light
DESCRIPTION:IN PERSON OR ONLINE Online registrants will be sent a Zoom link on the day of the celebration. \n5:30pm – Lakshmi Puja \nWe conclude with samosas\, chai and sparklers! \nThis is one of the most auspicious celebrations of the year. Diwali means “a row of lights”. Light your own ghee lamps or tea lights at home and join us! \nThere are various alleged origins attributed to this festival. Some hold that they celebrate the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. It also commemorates the day when the triumphant Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. On this day also Sri Krishna and His wife Satya Bama killed the demon Narakasura. \nPeople forget and forgive on this day. There is an air of charity\, festivity and friendliness everywhere—a genuine sense of joy and oneness. \nSuggested donation: $25 (This event is supported 100% by donations.) \nMore about DiwaliIn a happy mood of great rejoicing\, village folk move about freely\, mixing with one another without any reserve\, all enmity being forgotten. People embrace one another with love. Diwali is a great unifying force. Those with keen inner spiritual ears will clearly hear the voice of the sages\, “O Children of God! Unite\, and love all”. The vibrations produced by the greetings of love which fill the atmosphere are powerful enough to bring about a change of heart in every man and woman in the world. Alas! That heart has considerably hardened\, and only a continuous celebration of Diwali in our homes can rekindle in us the urgent need of turning away from the ruinous path of hatred. \nO Ram! The light of lights\, the self-luminous inner light of the Self is ever shining steadily in the chamber of your heart. Sit quietly. Close your eyes. Withdraw the senses. Fix the mind on this supreme light and enjoy the real Diwali\, by attaining illumination of the soul. \nHe who Himself sees all but whom no one beholds\, who illumines the intellect\, the sun\, the moon and the stars and the whole universe but whom they cannot illumine\, He indeed is Brahman\, He is the inner Self. Celebrate the real Diwali by living in Brahman\, and enjoy the eternal bliss of the soul. \n. . . \nRegister\n\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastPhone *Email *How will you attend? *I will attend in person.I will attend online.Donation for Diwali *$25 suggested donation. SUMMARY:Vocal Concert with Gaayatri
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 7 • 7:00–8:30pm PDT \nAccompanied by Hemant Ekbote on tabla and Anand Vemuri on bansuri flute \nGAAYATRI is a practicing Naad Yogini descending from one of the last living lineages of Naad Yogis. Her lineage\, the Rampur-Maihar Senia Gharana\, is one of the last living lines of music that can be traced back to Mian Tansen\, a legendary musician who bears training from the greatest Naad Yogi of living memory – Swami Haridas. It is one of the last living traditions of Naad Yoga where music is passed down to students as a deeply spiritual practice\, and practiced as a lifestyle. She is the first pure vocalist of this lineage since the 16th century and was trained to represent this rare vocal practice in its most authentic form. \nShe studied under the Late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan beginning her training with him in the traditional Guru-Shishya parampara at the age of 4\, studying with him for her whole childhood until his passing. Gaayatri’s unique style is characterized by its roots in the oldest form of Raaga music through Vedic Dhrupad. \n. . .\nRegister\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *PhoneI will attend *in persononlineClassical Indian Performances *10/4 Sri Rhitom Sarkar in Concert (suggested donation) - $30.0010/4 Sri Rhitom Sarkar in Concert (sliding scale) - $25.00Additional Donation*Your tax-deductible donations help to keep these classical programs available for all!Stripe Credit Card *Submit

SUMMARY:Benefit Concert for Altadena Fire Relief
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 15 • 7:30–9:30pm  \n\n\n\nWe gather to grieve\, feel and heal together. We invite you to come for a meditative evening of profound\, classical Indian music. If you have been affected by the recent fires\, come as our guest. If you would like to support those who have been displaced\, we welcome your generous donations. Proceeds of this concert will be awarded to Paul and Alma Livingstone who lost their home and music studio in the Altadena Fire. Their positivity and significant community work in the arts is already a huge support for their beloved neighborhood. Read more about their Soul Force Project here\, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that promotes changemaking through global music and the arts for all ages. They present live events and community activations around themes of nonviolent action.  \n\nMeet the distinguished musicians who will perform: \n* * * Paul Livingstone starts off the evening with a bass solo. \nInternational performing artist and activist Paul Livingstone spent a highly formative teenage year initiating his study of music in India\, eventually becoming one of the few American disciples of the legendary Pt. Ravi Shankar. He has performed around the US\, South Asia\, Europe\, and Latin America\, developing a reputation as a serious proponent of Indian classical raga music. In 2022 Paul completed a 6-month research fellowship researching dhrupad\, one of the planet’s oldest living music traditions and performed widely around India. \nAs a composer\, Paul brings a grounded knowledge of tradition to his work. He has composed and recorded for film and television\, as well as for numerous live theater and dance productions. He has performed on three Grammy-winning records and is featured on diverse world music and jazz crossover records with artists such as the late Juan Gabriel\, Alanis Morrisette\, Ricky Kej\, Ozomatli\, Josef Leimberg\, Build an Ark\, Tyler Childers and Chrissie Hynde. \nPaul leads the Arohi Ensemble and performs regularly as a classical sitarist and world/jazz crossover upright bassist. He is on the music faculty at Glendale Community College as a teacher of Indian and world music ensembles.  \n. \n* * * The program continues with dhrupad vocals by Sumeet Anand accompanied by Amol Ghode on pakhawaj.\n. \nSumeet Anand Pandey (stage name) is a hereditary musician of the illustrious Darbhanga lineage of vocalists from Bihar in India known particularly for Dhrupad. This is the extant form of Hindustani classical music formalised towards the latter half of the medieval period. Grandson of Padmashri Pandit Siyaram Tiwari and disciple of Pandit Abhay Narayan Mallick (grandnephew and master disciple of Padmashri Pandit Ram Chatur Mallick)\, Sumeet is professionally active in this field as a performer and teacher for over a decade. \n \nSumeet is A-grade artist of All India Radio (A.I.R) and has performed extensively in India as well as toured Berlin\, Rome\, Paris\, Madrid\, Hague\, London\, Prague\, Budapest and other European cities for concerts and workshops. He received fellowships from the Ministry of Culture\, Government of India and Sahitya Kala Parishad\, Government of Delhi and  conducted research on Dhrupad\, its historical journey and evolving pedagogy. His debut album titled ‘Morning Meditation-Dhrupad of Darbhanga Tradition’ was released in 2020 on Naxos World (now ARC Music) worldwide. \n \nSupported by a Fulbright Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship (FNAPE) for 2024-25\, Sumeet is in the USA for the first time and hosted by the Department of Ethnomusicology\, Herb Alpert School of Music\, UCLA as Visiting Associate Professor Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 terms for concerts\, workshop\, teaching and research. Hear a sample of his singing here. Photo credit: House of Music\, Budapest\n \nDhrupad is the ancient style of North Indian (also known as Hindustani) classical music that developed in the 14th century and flourished for the next 3-4 centuries before acceding its popularity to the newer style\, Khayal. Originally sung at temples and later in royal courts and now in public concerts\, Dhrupad is known for its calmer nature\, majestic gait\, and melodic\, rhythmic and lyrical richness. The presentation strives to create a sense of tranquility and avoids an exhibitionist approach but is not bereft of depth and virtuosity. \n\n\n \n\nAmol Ghode belongs to an old and well-known tradition of Pakhawaj players called the Nana Panse tradition. His guru in Pakhawaj\, Pt. Vasantrao Ghorpadkar was a renowned and respected Pakhawaj player. Amol continues his learning from Pt. Ghorpadkar’s grandson Shri. Nikhil Ghorpadkar. \nAmol got his earliest training in Tabla in Kolhapur\, India from Pt. Keshavrao Dharmadhikari and his son Pt. Rajprasad Dharmadhikari. As a young artist\, he was honored with a prestigious scholarship from the Govt of India. He is also currently taking lessons in Khyal singing of Gwalior and Agra traditions from Pt. Chandrashekhar Mahajan. He has done sound and music work for films by Kumar Shahani\, Gurvinder Singh and Elroy Pinto. Amol lives in San Diego. Hear a sample of his playing here. \n\n\n\n* * * * *\n \nA recital opens with Aalap—a semi-abstract unfolding of a rāg (a melodic framework) having non-pulsating (anibaddha) and pulsating (nibaddha) parts\, performed over the drone instrument\, Tanpura. The musical notes are pronounced through vowels derived from Sanskrit chanting ‘Hari Om Anant Narayan’. Compositions set to different Taal (rhythmic cycle)\, mainly in Sanskrit and Braj bhasha are sung towards the later half of a concert\, with the percussive accompaniment of Pakhawaj (barrel-shaped drum).\n \nDevotional and sacred compositions\, as well as other themes such as nature\, seasons and spirituality are common in Dhrupad repertoire. SUMMARY:Pandit Suman Laha in Concert with Indranil Mallick
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 13 • 6:00–8:00pm  \nPANDIT SUMAN LAHA was born in Kolkata\, where he was inspired by his great grand uncle\, late Shri Nadu Mullick\, to pursue his love for music. Shri Mullick was a close friend of Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. \nTaught in the purest senia tradition by his teacher Pt. Shyamal Chattopadhyay\, Suman has become one of the most accomplished practitioners of stringed Indian Classical music. Suman’s instrument of choice is a variation of the more traditional veena\, a design that Suman himself crafted. His style of music stays true to traditional Dhrupad\, maintaining strict grammar and rules. He is especially skilled at maintaining his grammatical excellence even when performing uncommon ragas and talas. \nSuman has performed in many prestigious musical conferences and concerts in India. He has also extensively toured Europe\, performing in concerts\, workshops and music festivals. In the US\, Suman has been performing in concerts for musical organizations and universities\, as well as teaching Indian Classical music since 2001.  \n \nTalent\, virtuosity and youthful dynamism blend in perfect proportion to project INDRANIL MALLICK as a leading tabla player of his generation. Intensive training since the age of five under eminent masters including his uncle Montu Mallick\, Prof Dhabol Bandyopadhyay\, Shri Uttam Chakraborty; and currently\, living legend Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri has shaped Indranil’s rich repertoire and contributed to his reputation in the national and international arena.       Indian Radio & Television has awarded Indranil the highest ranking. Lauded by connoisseurs and critics for his solo performances and accompaniment with renowned musicians\, Indranil was the first tabla player to receive the prestigious Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Award in 2015. \n. . .\nRegister\nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastEmail *PhoneI will attend *in persononlineClassical Indian Performances *10/4 Sri Rhitom Sarkar in Concert (suggested donation) - $30.0010/4 Sri Rhitom Sarkar in Concert (sliding scale) - $25.00Additional Donation*Your tax-deductible donations help to keep these classical programs available for all!Stripe Credit Card *Submit

SUMMARY:Unite for a Peaceful Planet
DESCRIPTION:5:00–5:30am PST (First Sunday of the month) \nJoin the Sivananda organization in a worldwide peace action: gathering 100\,000 meditation practitioners across the globe once a month for a 30-minute practice of meditation\, positive intention and repetition of the peace mantra Om Namo Narayanaya. When a certain percentage of people in the world align their minds at the same time with a strong positive intention\, this can neutralize the chaos and unrest generated by negative thinking\, ignorance\, and greed. The Mantra Om Namo Narayanaya was given to humanity to be used in times of need to generate powerful waves of harmony and peace. We invite all yoga students and anyone wanting to help create a positive future for humanity to participate in this large-scale peace mission. Let us join in this effort to bring about a shift in the world consciousness. \nThe focus of our meditation will be the unity of all beings including our home\, planet earth\, as well as raising awareness towards global warming. \nThis will stream on Instagram Live and on our regular Satsang link. If you’d like to participate\, but prefer to connect in a different way\, please contact us!

SUMMARY:Classical Indian Dance + Sitar Performance
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 23 • 2:00–5:00pm  \nON TOUR FROM INDIAEnjoy these Indian classical forms in a unique concert experience. \nPart 1: Bharatanatyam dance performance by Oindrila Roy MallickPart 2: Paul Livingstone on sitar\, accompanied by Indranil Mallick on tabla \nOINDRILA ROY MALLICK is well-known among the younger generation of Bharatanatyam dancers in India. Trained initially under the late Guru K. P.P Thampi from the age of five\, Oindrila honed her dance skills further under legendary Guru Khagendra Nath Barman\, one of the most senior disciples of Guru Rukmini Devi Arundale\, founder of the unique “Kalakshetra” style (of Bharataatyam). In 2011\, she came under the guidance of Guru Abhoy Pal of Kalamandalam style. Oindrila’s dance reflects the cumulative richness of her learning experience.         She teaches dance in India and has been touring in Europe since 2011. Recently\, she received the Chairman’s Award at the International Multicultural Dance and Music Festival in Pune\, India. In 2021\, she received “The Best Bharatanatyam Dancer” award from Lion’s Club Chennai. She holds a Master’s Degree in Bharatanatyam from Rabindra Bharati University. \nPerforming artist and activist PAUL LIVINGSTONE spent a highly formative teenage year initiating his study of music in India\, eventually becoming one of the few American disciples of the legendary Pt. Ravi Shankar. He has since toured as a performer around the US\, South Asia\, Europe\, and Latin America\, developing a reputation as a serious proponent of South Asian classical raga music. Paul just returned from a 6-month fellowship in India researchingdhrupad\, one of the planet’s oldest living music traditions.
